After arriving in Reykjavik the night before, the next morning we enjoyed a scenic drive to the hotel in Borgarnes, a small town on the shores of Borgarfjörður.  The afternoon was the first taste of Iceland’s raw beauty with an excursion to Deildartunguhver, the site of the country’s largest thermal spring and to Hraunfossar Falls, a beautiful and unusual cold springs that wells up through the lava landscape and cascades into the Hvítá River.  From there the group visited the Settlement Center, and interactive museum featuring two multimedia exhibitions.  The first detailed of Iceland’s earliest settlers and the other brought to life the famed Egil’s Saga, Iceland’s most famous saga that chronicles the life and lineage of the 10th century Viking Egill Skallagrímsson.
